چکیده

Conjugate, or bimodal, fault patterns dominate the geological literature on shear failure. Based on Anderson's (1905) application of the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, these patterns have been interpreted from all tectonic regimes, including normal, strike-slip and thrust (reverse) faulting. However, a fundamental limitation of the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion e and others that assume faults form parallel to the intermediate principal stress, s2 e is that only plane strain can result from slip on the conjugate faults. However, deformation in the Earth is widely accepted as being three-dimensional, with truly triaxial stresses (s1 > s2 > s3) and strains. Polymodal faulting, with three or more sets of faults forming and slipping simultaneously, can generate three-dimensional strains from truly triaxial stresses. Laboratory experiments and outcrop studies have verified the occurrence of polymodal fault patterns in nature. These fault patterns present a fundamental challenge to our understanding of shear failure in rocks (and other materials) and an opportunity to improve our understanding of seismic hazards and fluid flow in the subsurface. In this review, we assess the published evidence, theories and models for polymodal faulting before suggesting ways to produce a truly general and valid failure criterion for

Post-Triassic normal faulting and extensional structures in Central Alborz, Northern Iran

This paper presents structural evidence of extensional activity in Central Alborz during Mesozoic. The structural evidence of homogenous early stage stretching such as layer-parallel to oblique boudinage of Permian and Triassic rocks in various portions of the study area accompanied by extensional-fibrous fractures were followed with more advanced extensional features. These extensional structu...

Influence of Gravity on the Geometry of Martian Normal Faults

Introduction: Extensional fault scarps on Mars bear a striking resemblance to fault scarps on Earth, including geometric features such as horsts, grabens, relay ramps and breached relay ramps, en echelon arrangement of faults and grabens, and scaling characteristics [1], [2], [3]. Other surface features associated with extensional faulting on Mars are lines (" chains ") of circular topo-graphic...

Numerical Investigation of Effect of Rock Bolt Angle on Shear Behavior of Rock Bridges

In this work, the effect of rock bolt angle on the shear behavior of Rock Bridges is investigated using the particle flow code in two dimensions (PFC2D) for three different Rock Bridge lengths. Firstly, the calibration of PF2D is performed to reproduce the gypsum sample. Then the numerical models with the dimensions of 100 mm * 100 mm are prepared. The Rock Bridge is created in the middle of th...

بررسی تأثیر روش recycling شیمیایی بر روی استحکام برشی پیوند براکت های فلزی ارتودنسی

Background and Aim: Recycling of brackets can significantly reduce the price of fixed orthodontic appliances but if the bond is more prone to failure during treatment, this potential benefit will disappear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chemical recycling on bond strength of metal orthodontic brackets and failure pattern of recycled brackets. Material and Methods: In th...

Coulomb Constitutive Laws for Friction: Contrasts in Frictional Behavior for Distributed and Localized Shear

-We describe slip-rate dependent friction laws based on the Coulomb failure criteria. Frictional rate dependence is attributed to a rate dependence of cohesion c and friction angle qS. We show that differences in the stress states developed during sliding result in different Coulomb friction taws for distributed shear within a thick gouge layer versus localized shear within a narrow shear band ...
